 Highballs are a classification of drink that is generally defined as 1 ½ oz of a single liquor combined with 4 or 5 oz of Soda served in a Highball glass over ice.
The definition of a Highball drink has changed over time. Today, some define the Highball as basically anything served in a Highball glass. However, the purpose of the highball is to make a drink that can be built quickly and consistently in just a few seconds. Thus, simplicity is really best.
All the bartender has to do is put a half a scoop of ice in a Highball glass, add a couple jigs of the liquor, spray in a couple seconds of soda, add a lemon slice or a cherry and a straw, and the drink is complete. It should only take an experienced bartender about 10 – 15 seconds to make a Highball from start to finish.
More complex drinks like the Long Island Iced Tea, Sex on a Beach, and a Sea Breeze, while often served in a Highball Glass, are not “Highballs” per se. While these are excellent drinks, they take too long to make to be considered traditional Highballs.
Following are some highball cocktails that, if you are a proper Drunk, you probably have lots of experience with:
Jack and Coke
1 ½ oz Jack Daniels (or any other Bourbon)
4 oz Coke
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Scotch and Soda
1 ½ oz Scotch
4 oz Club Soda
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Seven and Seven
1 ½ oz Seagrams Seven (Or any other Whiskey you like)
4 oz 7-up (or other Lemon-lime Soda)
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Gin and Tonic
1 ½ oz Gin
4 oz Tonic Water (or use Seltzer or Club Soda)
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Vodka Tonic
1 ½ oz Vodka
4 oz Tonic Water (or use Seltzer or Club Soda)
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Screwdriver
Not all Highballs are made with carbonated sodas. One of the most famous Highballs is the Screwdriver.
1 ½ oz Vodka
4 oz Orange Juice
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Captain and Coke
1 ½ oz Spiced Rum
4 oz Coke
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
Fuzzy Navel
3 oz Peach Schnapps
3 oz Orange Juice
Stir together and pour into a Highball Glass filled with ice.
