 I was driving on I-70 with a friend of mine last week when I saw it - the New Belgium beer truck. And that was when it dawned on me that if I was going to hijack any beer truck, this should be the one. Right here, right now.
Why? Well, because we were out in the middle of nowhere, driving through the Rocky Mountains, so no one would notice for a couple hours that the truck was missing. But more importantly, there was a pretty good chance it was partly full of 2 Below � the Winter Seasonal from New Belgium that kicks ass in so many ways � and I had run out of the case I had bought a couple weeks ago.
Then, of course, the rational side kicked in and reminded me that I had too much to lose to go around stealing beer trucks. And anyway, how was I going to take over a truck going 70 miles per hour through the Rockies anyway. Plus, I�m sure the guy driving the truck was probably pretty cool, and I�d hate to get into a fight over beer.
So, I let him go. Lucky bastard.
Which brings us to the beer in question here: 2 Below by New Belgium. This beer really is that good. I�m not the sort of beer geek to go around talking about the beer�s �nose� or its �tails� or anything like that, but this beer does have some qualities that I really haven�t found in other Winter seasonals.
First of all, I like to taste the malt. 2 Below has this toasted malt flavor that just tastes warm and comfortable. You can really imagine drinking a nice mug full of this beer sitting in a cabin in front of a fire watching the snow fall outside with a lazy dog by your side.
Secondly, the hops are there, but not over-powering. Too often these days brewers just pile on hops without doing the whole balance thing. This beer has definite hop taste, but it�s blended in there amongst the other flavors.
Thirdly, the beer is actually relatively light in color and weight. Which means you don�t feel so full after having a pull off the tap. It�s a great session beer.
I really hate to give out too many 5 Beer ratings, but this one is a definite �Must Buy�. It earns it�s 5/5.
