I like bacon a lot. I like bacon so much, in fact, that when I eat breakfast, I try to finish my eggs and toast first so that the last bite I take is always bacon.
Snow Plow by Widmer Brothers is like bacon. You'll want it to be the last sip you take for the night. And once you try it, you'll probably want to make it the first sip too!
When you think about it, Snow plow is actually superior to bacon in several important ways.
- It takes much longer to cook bacon than it does to open a Snow Plow (Instant gratification is assured).
- Bacon causes your cholesterol to go up more than Snow Plow (so, it's a healthy alternative).
- Snow Plow won’t make your fingers all greasy (Keeps your shirt from getting dirty before work).
- You can’t get “plowed” eating bacon, but you can by drinking Snow Plow.

Stylistically, Snow Plow is a milk stout – meaning it has lactose (the sugar found in dairy products) added to sweeten and add body to the brew. Since beer yeast cannot ferment lactose, the sugars stay even after the rest of the barley sugars have been consumed.
That doesn’t mean that Snow Plow is an overly sweet beer. Instead the sweetness is noticeable, but balanced - it's the way it should be in a stout. The taste has a lot of character with Chocolate, Coffee, and Roasted Malt flavors.
Snow Plow is Widmer's Winter Seasonal beer, and according to the brewery's website (www.widmer.com) the beer was developed through Widmer’s participation in the “Collaborator Project” - a relationship between Widmer and a local home brewing club to develop new recipes.
As a home brewer, I have to say I am very pleased when I see breweries supporting the home brewing community, and I think that this beer is a testament to the positive effect home brewing has had on the quality of beer in the United States.
All in all, this is a truly delicious beer, and us Drunks aren’t the only ones who think so. In 2004 it won a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival. It deserves its 5 out of 5 rating. This is a "Must Try" beer!
